Ebook About A “brilliant and terrifically fun”* debut novel brings an enchanting new voice to fantasy. Onna can write the parameters of a spell faster than any of the young men in her village school. But despite her incredible abilities, she’s denied a place at the nation’s premier arcane academy. Undaunted, she sails to the bustling city-state of Hexos, hoping to find a place at a university where they don’t think there’s anything untoward about providing a woman with a magical education. But as soon as Onna arrives, she’s drawn into the mysterious murder of four trolls. Tsira is a troll who never quite fit into her clan, despite being the leader’s daughter. She decides to strike out on her own and look for work in a human city, but on her way she stumbles upon the body of a half-dead human soldier in the snow. As she slowly nurses him back to health, an unlikely bond forms between them, one that is tested when an unknown mage makes an attempt on Tsira’s life. Soon, unbeknownst to each other, Onna and Tsira both begin devoting their considerable talents to finding out who is targeting trolls, before their homeland is torn apart… *Kat Howard, Alex Award-winning author of An Unkindness of MagiciansBook Unnatural Magic Review :
This was not your typical fantasy, I grant it that much, but the author's reach far exceeded their grasp in this mislabeled gender studies unit taking a stroll in high fantasy duds. I'm down with any gender POV or alien POV or whatever you've got, but it has to be anchored in a coherent plot and a consistent world and this book had neither. There was a mashup of two separate stories that never quite cohered, a "detective story" that was wholly unsatisfying and characters whose motivations were entirely alien, as absolutely no words were spent explaining the mores of this weird and gender-fluid world.Something has to connect the reader to the story, some exposition or illumination of the world in a setup or reveal that explains why these characters act the way they do, otherwise you have no compass to follow in deciphering their actions. Was two of the protagonists being romantically involved considered transgressive? It seemed like it should be, but since the reader had no sense of what the norms of this society were, there's no way to tell what was transgressive and what was not, and thus almost no suspense or impact for me.The role of the Trolls as being both revered and reviled was also nonsensical, and varied so greatly from locale to locale without explanation that I was thinking this was some pre-holocaust fantasy writing with Trolls cast as prewar Polish Jews (and homosexuals, and The Other), but again if that was the main point, the exposition came up far too short for me to get a handle on it.I left the book about 80% finished after the several-th time the characters and populace did something completely baffling to me in light of what I thought I'd learned about this world in the previous couple dozen chapters. Please, change my mind if you can. I don't normally write reviews for things I either didn't absolutely love or wish I had read a review to warn me off.I originally came across The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry, which is a sequel of sorts to this, and absolutely loved it. So when I finished that I came and got this as well and gave it a go.It was a slow start for me. I think I was close to 50% by the time my engagement with the characters picked up. I'm glad I read this, as it sets some world building to bring further clarity to the Ruthless Lady's Guide, but I won't reread this installment. It was lovely to see the origin story of Winnifer's parents though. My advice to anyone considering this is if the blurb piques your interest, go for it. Or if the blurb for Ruthless Lady's Guide piques your interest to the point where you want the most thorough backstory to the world building possible, then you should also go for it with this installment. This author is very good, and I suspect had I read this one first I would have enjoyed it more, because what really swept me away for Ruthless Lady's Guide was the sheer amount of whimsy in every sentence and chapter title. This is more of what I would call a regular book. All in all great world building, excellent character development, and good pacing. It's probably actually worth the full 5 stars, but as I reserve that for the few I will reread over and over, I gave this 4.
